PF usually affects people aged 70 to 75, and is rare under 50.

Older age is linked to worse outcomes in PF.

Men are over 3 times more likely than women to suffer from PF.

Patients often wait 1–2+ years for a diagnosis after symptoms begin.

Around a third of PF patients have had symptoms for over 24 months before diagnosis.

Without treatment, median survival in IPF is around 3–5 years after diagnosis, though antifibrotics can slow progression.
- There are 5K-6K PF deaths per year in the UK.

Male mortality rates in pulmonary fibrosis are higher than in female.
- Genetic factors may influence risk and variation in PF between populations.
