We are excited to announce that applications for the British Association of Lung Research (BALR) and Breathing Matters Summer Studentship 2025 are now open! This fantastic opportunity supports undergraduate students in gaining hands-on research experience in respiratory science.
About the Studentship
The program offers basic science and medical undergraduate students a 6 to 8 week research project during the summer, working under the supervision of your Principal Investigator (PI). Projects will focus on a range of lung conditions, including pulmonary fibrosis, bronchiectasis, pneumonia or cross-respiratory research.
Successful students will receive:
✅ £1,600 stipend for living expenses
✅ £400 for consumables (including poster printing)
✅ £250 travel award to present findings at a scientific conference
Additionally, students will have the opportunity to showcase their research on both the BALR website and newsletter as well as on the Breathing Matters social platforms.
Inspiring Future Scientists
Last year’s successful applicant, Michelle Stainbrook, a student at UCL, analysed over 57,000 fibroblast cells from healthy and fibrotic lungs. Her work led to the identification of 11 key genes, with a particular focus on NUAK1 (ARK5), which she explored through cell culturing.
How to Apply
If you’re a Principal Investigator with an exciting project idea or know a student who would benefit from this opportunity, encourage them to apply!
